Winter Safety Tips for Central Ohio Seniors

Safety Tips to Prepare for Winter

1. Inspect Home Heating Sources. Unfortunately, it is all too common to hear about an older adult losing their life due to carbon monoxide poisoning created by a faulty furnace or a fire caused by a space heater. Be sure your senior loved one has their furnace inspected and that they have a working carbon monoxide detector. If they use a space heater to help cut heating expenses, be sure to review the safety precautions it requires. Most need clearance of one to three feet on all sides to be safe.

2. Winter Fall Prevention. Snowy, icy sidewalks and driveways present serious fall risks for seniors who might not have the balance or strength of a younger person. Walkways and porches are places where falls happen most frequently in winter months. If your loved one can’t afford a professional snow removal service, contact their local agency on aging to see what resources might be available for assistance.

3. Prepare for Power Outages. We all know a central Ohio winter storm can lead to a loss of power. Help your senior loved one stock up just in case. Check to be sure they have several flashlights and extra batteries, warm blankets, and a battery-powered radio. Keep a stockpile of non-perishable foods and bottled water. A few ideas include canned meats like tuna fish and chicken, peanut butter, nuts and trail mix, cereal, crackers, dried fruit, and granola bars.

4. Vehicle Safety Inspection. Finally, if , remind them to schedule a winter tune-up for their car. They should have their tire tread examined, tire pressure checked, window wipers replaced if needed, and the battery inspected. They will also need to fill their anti-freeze and wiper fluid tanks.
